When I bring my daughter along for exercise excursions, I'm usually letting her be the DJ, choosing the music or playing Circle Round stories. But last week, during a bike ride, she said she didn't want any music at all. I think she was simply excited to be on the back of my bike as it had been a while since we'd gone for a ride together.
As we rode, I found myself smiling as I listened to her hum and eventually begin making up her own little songs. We also enjoyed the peace of the evening: the cool breeze on our faces and the warmth of the late-afternoon sun on our backs. The experience left me wondering about the potential harms of filling every walk, run, drive, or ride with podcasts, music, and other forms of constant input. It doesn't take much searching to discover that intentional periods of quiet and reduced sensory input can help children build concentration, supports memory and language development, fosters creativity, and strengthens emotional self-regulation. One study involving rodents even found that mice in the silent environment experienced the most significant brain cell growth. Continuous sound can overstimulate developing brains, while quiet moments create space for creativity and self-reliance. Without constant input, children—and adults alike—have more opportunities to wonder, observe, imagine, and create. As parents, we spend so much energy curating experiences for our children. But perhaps one of the greatest gifts we can offer is a little less input and a little more space. What might happen if we occasionally left the music off? What might we discover if we spent more time in silence? What ideas, observations, or emotions might surface if we weren't constantly filling every empty moment? Let me know your thoughts and experiences.
